This directional boring sewer installation in Powder Springs, GA, began after other plumbers told the homeowner that the required sewer connection could not be completed. A protected creek stood between the home and the municipal sewer manhole.
The homeowner had an old septic tank and had been told by the county that the property had to connect to the municipal sewer system. Because the manhole was on the opposite side of the protected creek, a conventional open trench from the house to the connection point was not an option.
Davis & Sons Plumbing needed to find a way to install a properly pitched sewer line beneath the backyard and creek without penetrating the waterway or excavating the entire route.
Davis & Sons Plumbing used directional boring to complete the sewer installation. This trenchless method allowed the project team to bore an underground path from the house, beneath the creek, and toward the manhole on the other side.
As the boring machine advanced, a crew member used above-ground locating equipment to read the position and depth of the drill head. That information allowed the team to guide the bore and maintain the consistent fall required for a gravity sewer line.
The pitch had to be exact. If a sewer line is too steep, water can outrun the solids and leave waste behind. If the line is too flat, material can collect inside it. Either condition can eventually cause a blockage or sewer backup. Tracking the drill head throughout the installation helped the crew keep the new line at the necessary grade.
After the drill reached the other end, the crew attached the sewer pipe and pulled it back through the same underground path created by the boring machine. The new line was then tied into the manhole across the creek.
“In our business, we can’t just say no. You have to figure out how.” — Justin Davis, Owner of Davis & Sons Plumbing
Only two openings were needed: one at the house and one at the manhole. The route between them remained underground, preserving the homeowner’s landscape and avoiding the disruption of a continuous open trench.
Davis & Sons Plumbing completed a sewer connection that other plumbers had said could not be done. The new line was installed through the backyard and beneath the creek without excavating through the protected waterway.
By minimizing excavation and property disturbance, the directional boring approach also helped reduce the homeowner’s overall project cost, according to the Davis & Sons Plumbing team. The home was connected to the municipal sewer system while respecting the physical restrictions created by the creek.
This project required more than a standard sewer excavation. Directional boring gave the team a controlled way to route the line beneath an obstacle while maintaining the pitch needed for proper drainage.
Depending on site conditions, trenchless boring may also be considered when creeks, driveways, established landscaping, or other obstacles make continuous excavation impractical. The right approach depends on line depth, required grade, the available connection point, and other site-specific factors.
Homeowners facing a difficult sewer project can begin with a professional sewer inspection and site evaluation. Davis & Sons Plumbing also provides plumbing installation services for residential projects.
